Each year, Australia sees an influx of international students, immigrants, and workers from foreign countries. Not everyone arrives from English speaking countries so the language barrier can become an issue, even for some highly skilled workers. Australian English also has its own famously distinct accent and unique slang words. Therefore, some students who are more familiar with American or Canadian English may require some adjusting.

In any case, if you plan on studying or working in Australia, and need English lessons, you can sign up for English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons. Here are several tips for choosing a good English school Melbourne or anywhere in Australia:

Look for Accreditation

There could be hundreds of ESL institutions in Australia. Not all would be equally good. If you want to end up learning at a legitimate institution, look for accreditation of the school. The Australian government accredits centres that offer vocational or language training. Any type of accreditation would be better than none. If you study at a non accredited institution, the certificate you earn at the completion of your studies may not be accepted by an employer or a university.

Choose a School Depending on Your Proficiency Level

You can study English as a beginner, intermediate level, or university level student in Australia. Choose a school depending on your existing proficiency level. For example, if you are already conversational in English, then choosing an ESL institution for beginner student may just be redundant. Therefore, realistically estimate your proficiency level and enrol in a suitable program.

Are You Plan on Taking an Examination?

If you plan on taking a language proficiency exam like IELTS or TOEFL, then enrolling in a school where students are specifically prepared for these programs would be a great choice. Most Australian universities prefer the IELTS exam, therefore, if you plan on undergraduate or graduate studies, then that’s the program to enrol in. Find an ESL institution based on their examination prep courses to fast-track your studies.

Ask Around for Recommendations

Don’t forget to ask other students about where they prefer to study. Fellow students who have taken ESL lessons would have a good understanding of where the best learning centres are. Therefore, don’t ignore their recommendations. You may find answers that you don’t typically find at FAQ sections of various schools. You can ask friends, family, or colleagues for ESL institution recommendations in your area.

Visit the School’s Website

Do visit the school’s website to learn more about it. You will find detailed information about the school’s programs, costs, exam prep courses, and mission on the website. It will save you a lengthy phone call to a school representative. You can also look at information in writing so you are not dependent on what anyone tells you either. Browse through the entire website for the ESL institution to properly understand what it does.

Check Online Directories

Want to know which ESL institutions are located in your area? Then go to online directories, which lists institutions based on the city or the locality. This would be a great place to start looking for all the options available to you. You can narrow down the list later.

Finding a great ESL institution in Australia is not a difficult task. These places are available everywhere in major cities. Therefore, do your research and choose the best ESL institution for you.
